Q1. “What can I do if I'm having trouble acquiring a signal?”
A1.
Q2. “How do I toggle between North Up, Course Up and Direction Up on the Map?”
A2. Tap the crosshairs button between the zoom controls to cycle between North Up, Course Up and Direction Up.
Q3. “Can I get turn-by-turn driving directions?”
A3. MotionX-GPS HD does not provide driving directions. Try our other navigation application MotionX-GPS Drive for 3G and 3GS iPhones if you're interested in tury-by-turn guidance while driving. Search for MotionX-GPS Drive in the App Store.
Q4. “How can I save power?”
A4. By turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use and dimming the screen brightness from within your iPad's Settings, you can reduce power consumption. In addition, turning off Accelerometrics Assisted GPS from Settings > Global will further reduce power consumption.
Q5. “What formats can I use to enter coordinates?”
A5. Coordinates can be entered in Degrees/Minutes/Seconds via the provided wheels. Alternatively, you can choose direct entry using the keyboard for greater input accuracy in either Degrees with decimal Minutes (DM), or Decimal Degrees (DD). Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) and Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) coordinates are also supported if chosen as the coordinate display format from Settings>Global Settings. You can also add a waypoint using TapTap® technology on the maps and charts page or by specifying a range and bearing from your current location.
Q6. “Is MotionX-GPS HD performance affected by other applications?”
A6. Occasionally apps that can run in the background, such as Mail, may affect the performance of MotionX-GPS HD. The user interface may become slow while large emails are being downloaded in the background. If the interface is slow and there aren't any inbound emails, your iPad is likely low on RAM. A reboot will resolve the low memory condition.
Q7. “What datum does MotionX-GPS HD use?”
A7. MotionX-GPS HD uses the WGS 84 datum.
Q8. “What is map caching?”
A8. Map caching improves map performance by saving your most recent map views (also known as map tiles) on your iPad. This helps especially when you have low cellular signal or no signal at all. Map caching is supported exclusively for the MotionX Road and MotionX Terrain maps. Other map options supported do not allow map caching due to licensing restrictions.
Q9. “How do I use the cached maps?”
A9. Map caching works automatically in the background for the MotionX Road and MotionX Terrain maps. Go to the Maps page, select either the MotionX Road or MotionX Terrain maps and you will notice better performance when your maps are cached especially when your iPad has weak 3G or WiFi data connection.
Q10. “What happens when the map cache size limit is exceeded?”
A10. When the map cache size limit has been exceeded, the oldest map tiles will be removed automatically to make room for new map views. If you are close to the limit and don't want to lose map tiles you've already cached, turn map caching off to prevent older tiles from being removed.
Q11. “How long do maps remain in cache?”
A11. Maps remain in cache until the size limit has been exceeded. At that time, your oldest map views (tiles) will be removed automatically to make room for new ones. Go to Settings > Maps and touch "Clear Cache" to manually empty your cache.
Q12. “If map caching is turned off, are my cached maps deleted?”
A12. If map caching is turned off, the map tiles already in cache are retained.
Q13. “Are maps cached for all zoom levels or only the zoom level I'm currently viewing?”
A13. Map tiles are only cached once they are displayed on the screen. If you'd like to cache multiple zoom levels, please use the Onboard Maps feature.
Q14. “Are cached and stored maps backed up when MotionX-GPS HD is sync'd with iTunes?”
A14. Cached and stored maps are not backed up when syncing with iTunes since large map tile sets can cause extended sync times.
Q15. “Does MotionX-GPS HD work when my iPad 3G in Airplane Mode?”
A15. No unfortunately not. When in airplane mode, the GPS chipset is disabled by the iPad. Third party iPad applications cannot override or alter the airplane mode functionality to enable the GPS chipset. If you want to ensure network data is not used while using MotionX GPS HD, remove your SIM card. The A-GPS (Assisted GPS) chipset in the 3G iPad is designed to use cellular or WiFi data to speed up the acquisition of your GPS signal, so you may need to wait 15 minutes or longer to acquire a signal if your SIM has been removed.
Q16. “How do I see my Onboard Maps?”
A16. Your Onboard Maps are integrated seamlessly into the Map page, just press the GPS home button in the lower left corner. If you would like to be sure that you're only viewing tiles which will be available when you're offline, turn off map data within MotionX-GPS HD from Settings > Maps. Switch "Map data" to the Off position. This will ensure that only your Onboard Maps as well as any cached map tiles will be present on the Map page. You will just have to make sure you are viewing the correct map type and zoom levels which you downloaded.
Q17. “Can I use MotionX-GPS HD on a Wifi iPad that does not contain a GPS chipset?”
A17. Yes, the Wifi iPad will run MotionX-GPS HD. Your WiFi connection does provide location data, although it's not as accurate as GPS. Apple may approve an external GPS sensor at some point but, at this time you will not be able to connect to a GPS signal from the WiFi only iPad. WiFi's accuracy can vary between 100 feet to 3 miles, when signal is available.
Q18. “Why is my Home position different from my current location?”
A18. If you are in Manual Position Mode and have not previously acquired Wifi or GPS signal, your Home position is defaulted to Fullpower Technologies in Santa Cruz, CA. To set a new Home position, choose one of your existing Waypoints or create a new Waypoint and set it as Home.
Q19. "I don't see my question in this FAQ page, how do I contact your support team?"
A19. Please submit your question to MotionX using the Send Feedback form.
