7. Guidance Modes

Q1. "What's the difference between Voice Guidance and Silent Guidance?"

A1. Voice Guidance plots a route on the Maps page and uses your GPS signal to track your progress on that route. As you near the next maneuver (e.g. turn left), you will automatically hear a voice prompt letting you know what to do. While in Voice Guidance mode, MotionX-GPS Drive will also automatically reroute you whenever you leave the original route.

While using Silent Guidance, you will need to use the arrows on the map page to skip forward and back manually through each of the maneuvers. A voice prompt will play when your arrow reaches the next maneuver. Rerouting will not automatically occur, you should press the Reroute button on the Maps page whenever you want to recalculate your route.

Q2. "How are the guidance for Drive and Walk modes different?"

A2. By default, Drive guidance will tend to use the fastest route by car, and takes into account rules such as one-way streets. Walk guidance chooses the fastest way for a pedestrian, which may not be the same as guidance for a vehicle - for example, highways are generally avoided.

Q3. "Can I avoid toll roads?"

A3. Yes. From the Settings page turn Avoid Toll Roads on. This feature avoids toll roads, but does not eliminate them. If an alternate route around the toll road is not viable or if the distance around is too large, you may still be routed on the toll road.

Q4. "What is Simulate & Pre-Load Maps?"

A3. A simulation is a preview of the route that would be used for navigation. You can run a simulation to familiarize yourself with a route before departing.

Running a simulation is also useful if you anticipate taking a long trip through an area with low or no cellular data coverage, because the map tiles downloaded during the simulation will be stored by MotionX-GPS Drive for future use. Although we preload maps along your route as you drive, you may want to run a simulation first if you will be in a dead zone for a particularly long time. We recommend choosing the 2x simulation speed on the Settings page so that all the map tiles have enough time to download to your device.

Q5. "Why do I see an "S" on my position arrow?"

A4. When you see an "S" on the orange arrow on the Maps page, there is currently a simulation running. You can press the Stop Sim button in the lower right area of the map if you wish to dismiss the simulation and see your current position instead.
